UNIVERSITY

Finished projects from my time in university.

I spent a total of 3 years in education at Grimsby Institute.

Name: Night Heist

Engine: Unity

Role: Level Design & UI Graphics

Night Heist was my final major project at University. I was with a team of 5 including myself. (below is a prototype video of the menu UI)

Level Design

Night Heist is a horror game set in a Museum. The player plays as a thief searching for an artifact, but soon realises something isn't quite right.

For the module we were tasked with creating a vertical slice of the game, as opposed to making the whole thing.

The player mechanics included, walking, running, vaulting/climbing, crouching/sneaking and interacting with world objects like doors, buttons and keypads.

Greybox

Showcase of the level design in the form of the grey box.

In order to create the layout for Night Heists museum, I used a package for Unity called Pro Builder.

This addon gave me far more control of the geometry so I could create complex shapes like stairs and arches quickly.

I also lit the whole scene with various point, spot and directional lights, in total the museum has around 500 lights.

Loading Screens

The overall style for the loading screens was inspired by Amnesia: The Dark Descent by Frictional Games.

I first used Unity to set up a scene with models from our character artist and aligning the camera and lights to my needs.

Afterwards, I would take the screenshot into Photoshop and manipulate it to get the final look.

2D Sprites, UI & 3D Modelling

Software Used: Photoshop, 3Ds Max & Unity

Here is a showcase of my Photoshop art work for Unity games made during my time at university and college projects.

1. Sunday Soccer

For this project we were put into teams to create a game with advanced mechanics. We decided to make a football game and that the advanced mechanics would be AI and a replay system so players could re watch their goals.

I was tasked with UI graphics and coming up with the team emblems based on the names given to me by one of the team members.

I based a lot of the designs on existing emblems to make them look authentic.

2. Uridium Remake

Our first project of the second year was to re create an old game from the 90s.

Our team decided to remake Uridium for the Commodore 64.

Before we knew if we were going to go 2D or 3D, I decided to put together some sprites and a first pass on the logo to see what the team thought.

Our lead programmer liked what I had done, but the team eventually settled on creating a 3D remake of Uridium, so only the logo design was applicable to the project.

3. Programming Platformer

Simple platformer with a wall climbing mechanic made almost from scratch, including coding.

While this was a programming focused module, I still wanted to create my own art assets, some of which would actually have tutorials build into them, like the A and D walls which tell the player how to move left and right.

Progamming Platformer Playthrough.

4. Slimey

Simple platformer with custom art inspired by Minecraft.

This was my first time using Unity to make a game.

Slimey contains 5 levels that each take over 2 minutes to complete with hidden collectables, physics objects and a small variety of enemies.

Slimey Kickstarter Video. (we were tasked to make a kickstarter video as if we were going through with making the game)

5. 3DS Max Modelling

First experience modelling in 3DS Max.

The task was to create close to a dozen models with one or two more complicated ones.

I decided to go for a world war 2 airfield theme.

COLLEGE

Finished projects from my time in college.

I spent a total of 2 years in education at The College of West Anglia.

2D Sprites, UI & 3D Modelling

Software Used: Photoshop, Blender & Gamemaker

1. Labyrinth

For this project we were told to make a game based on the board game 'Labyrinth'. The player has to navigate a maze to the exit whilst avoiding obstacles like enemies and gathering items like keys.

My role in the project was to create various models for enemies, items and level details.

2. Slimer

Slimer is a simple platformer made in Game Maker with custom art assets inspired by Minecraft.

Slimer has very basic mechanics: left and right movement, jumping and a fail state when touching enemies.

The game has total of 4 levels including tutorial and a hidden level.

3. Tower Defense Game

Tower defense game made in Adobe Flash.

Inspired by FTL, I created my own art assets for towers, enemies and UI.

1. Tower Base

2. Tower Weapons

a: Laser (Cheap)

b: Beam (High Damage)

c: Missle (Explosive)

d: Ion (Stops Enemies)

3: Basic Enemy

4. Main Menu UI

5. Enemy Concepts

a: Bomber (Slow, High HP)

b: Interceptor (Fast, Low HP)

c: Elite (Fast, High HP)

d: Fighter (Basic Enemy)
